Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac (3TB)

The Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac (3TB) ($179.99 list) is a desktop drive that has enough space to back up all currently shipping MacBook laptops and Mac desktops. It can also be used as a repository for your digital life, including photos, videos, and music. While it's not the fastest drive out there, it has enough speed to make sure you're not waiting on it to copy groups of files back and forth from the primary drive in your Mac. It's a good choice for the digital pack rat who needs a place to put all his digital photos and video downloads.

Design and Features
The Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac (3TB) looks very similar to the former Editors' Choice Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (4TB) ($250 list, 4 stars) that we reviewed earlier, with the same black plastic construction. This time, however, the Mac version has a matte silver stripe instead of a black one. The GoFlex and Backup Plus desktop lines share the same USM (Universal Storage Module) connectors between the base and the drive chassis. The USM connector allows you to physically lock the drive away at night while keeping the power and USB connectors connected to your Mac. Alternately, you can purchase a desktop Thunderbolt adapter ($189) so you can use the drive with the faster and more flexible Thunderbolt interface on current Macs. Aside from the USB and power ports on the back, there is a row of LEDs on the front of the base that let you know how full the drive is (provided you have the Seagate Dashboard software installed).

The drive we reviewed has a 3TB capacity, and there is a 2TB version currently available ($129.99). Theoretically, the base should be able to support a 4TB model as well, though that model isn't yet available. We suppose you could put the GoFlex Desk's 4TB drive on the Backup Plus' base and use it that way. The drive measures 7 by 1.75 by 4.75 inches (HWD) with the base installed. Since the drive requires an AC adapter to power up, this is strictly a deskbound drive. It's portable in that it's easy to pick up, but you won't be able to use it away from a power outlet, as you would a true bus-powered portable drive. The 3TB is plenty to back up or store the files from most desktops and laptops, good enough to hold over 100 high-definition movies and hundreds of standard-definition ones. The drive comes pre-formatted with Mac OS X's HFS+ format, so it will work with Time Machine out of the box.

The Backup Plus Desktop also comes with Seagate's Dashboard software, which activates the capacity gauge on the front of the drive's base. Four LEDs show how full the drive is while it's on. Seagate Dashboard also can be used to upload photos and videos to social media services like Facebook and Flickr, plus Dashboard can also be set to automatically or manually download pictures from your profile(s) on Facebook and Flickr for local safekeeping. Essentially it helps you manage your digital life online and locally on your Mac. Our current Editors' Choice desktop drive, the ioSafe Solo G3 (1TB) ($299 direct, 4.5 stars), relies on brute force and a bulletproof chassis to keep your data safe. The Seagate leverages online storage, helping you share and keep your photos safe online via social networking. The Backup Plus Desktop comes with a two-year warranty, better than the one-year warranty found on more generic hard drives.

Performance
This is a fairly speedy drive. It takes a scant eight seconds to copy our standard 1.2GB test folder via USB 3.0. This is much faster than the Iomega Mac Companion (3TB) ($369.99 list, 3.5 stars) (42 sec USB 2.0, 30 sec FireWire800), which also uses a single 3TB drive mechanism. That said, performance drives like the LaCie Little Big Disk 1TB SSD (Thunderbolt) ($999 list, 4.5 stars) are faster at six seconds. Likewise on the AJA System test (a test of data throughput optimized for video), the Seagate Backup Plus puts in a strong 167 MBps write throughput and a 171 MBps read throughput, way outclassing the Iomega Mac Companion by a factor of four or five. Of course, the SSD-powered LaCie Little Big Disk leaves them all in the dust. Essentially, the Seagate Backup Plus is a good Time Machine drive for quick file backups, but there are better-specialized drives for video editors and scientific users.

The Seagate Backup Plus Desktop is a very good Mac drive for the user that needs to clear a lot of space off their primary hard drives, or needs a Time Machine drive to back up the 1-3TB hard drive in their desktop Mac. You can of course use it with a MacBook laptop, but you'll have to leave the drive in your office or at home, since it's not portable. The current Editors' Choice ioSafe Solo G3 holds on to its desktop-class drive crown thanks to its data protections, both physical and pre-paid data recovery after an incident. The Solo G3 can also be bolted down to a metal or wood surface, which adds to its security. But if you simply need a repository for the files from your Mac, the Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive is a very good choice.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac (3TB) with several other hard drive side by side.

Protective Services Career Expert Amy Skyles Offers Tips for Military Veterans Looking at Post-Retirement Career Options

On Latest Podcast on Protective Services Leadership Insights, Ms. Skyles Lists Career Action Items Military Veterans Must Take to Ensure Transition Success

Upper Marlboro, MD (PRWEB) November 29, 2012

On a new podcast found on the Protective Services Leadership Insights section of the Protective Services Training Academy (PSTA) web site, protective services and executive security career expert Amy Skyles offers tips and suggestions military veterans must take to ensure career transition success. Ms. Skyles is an expert on helping military veterans and law enforcement professionals transition into protective services careers.

She discusses a range of topics including resume preparation, transition seminars and counseling, and handling relocation concerns.

?Many individuals transitioning from the military to the civilian workforce haven?t really had to interview or do a resume in the past. I would first and foremost recommend that they attend a transition seminar with whatever branch they?re currently in. At these seminars, they can get their questions answered, learn how to do a resume, and practice answering interview questions,? she said.

Ms. Skyles said that many retiring military personnel are looking to relocate to the Washington DC region because of the rich job market for protective service professionals and the relatively stable economy.

?A month away from retiring from the military, they should already be in training for a career in protective services but if they?re not, that?s okay,? she said. ?However if they?re looking to work right away, there really is a push to get training started in because it?s a longer process.

Ms. Skyles regularly posts her insights on career topics that affect military, law enforcement, and protective services officers and those considering a career switch. Her blog posts can be found here.

Amy Skyles is an industry expert on protective services careers. As the Director of Admissions at the Protective Services Training Academy just outside of Washington DC, she has worked with thousands of military veterans, law enforcement officers, and PSOs to help them learn about and understand career opportunities in protective services. She has counseled many military professionals looking for second careers once their military service has completed, including many veterans who have returned from service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Morse Pulls Contact Information from Your Gmail Messages and Syncs Them to Your Address Book

Morse Pulls Contact Information from Your Gmail Messages and Syncs Them to Your Address BookOften times you'll find contact information in the body or signature of an email, but you neglect to add it to your contacts and are forced to search your email for a phone number or address. Morse handles the busy work for you so any useful contact information stored in your emails get added to your address book automatically.

Morse requires next to no effort other than a Gmail account. You simply sign up for the beta by authorizing access to your Gmail account through the site and then Morse gets to work. The first full scan can take awhile, especially if you have a bunch of emails, but you'll receive a notification in your inbox once complete. It'll provide instructions on how you can keep your new, updated address book in sync with your mobile devices, too. Other than that, Morse is a pretty hands-off service. It caught me off-guard at first because you don't see anything happening, but the webapp is working behind the scenes. Although a lot of your email is scanned, only a limited data set is stored. Morse keeps the date and the sender/receiver information so it can track matches, but beyond that there is no need to retain more of your information.

Morse is currently in beta and free to use. Just sign up, let it do it's thing, and end up with a more comprehensive address book when it's finished.

Chinese terra cotta warriors had real, and very carefully made, weapons
The 7,000 soldiers buried with Qin Shi Huang in 210 B.C. were made of clay. But the bronze weapons the terra cotta army carried into the enormous tomb complex near Xi?an in western China were the real things: tens of thousands of swords, axes, spears, lances and crossbows, all as capable of spilling blood as anything Qin?s real army wielded when they triumphed, ending centuries of war and uniting China under a single rule for the first time

BOJ rift surfaces over easing as political debate heats up

TOKYO/NAGOYA, Japan (Reuters) - A split within the Bank of Japan was laid bare on Monday, with newcomers to its board pressing to strengthen commitment to an ultra-loose policy, as pressure on the central bank for bolder action intensified in the run up to next month's election.

In an effort to shift the debate away from the central bank, BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa repeated his view that monetary easing alone cannot beat deflation, urging the government to pursue fiscal reform and deregulation to boost domestic investment.

But minutes of the October 30 meeting of the nine-member board released on Monday showed Takehiro Sato, one the newcomers, had suggested a more activist stance on monetary expansion once Shirakawa's term ends in April.

The conduct of policy became one of the most heated areas of political debate ahead of the December 16 election after Shinzo Abe, the leader of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and likely next prime minister, called for the central bank to adopt negative interest rates and other radical measures.

Abe also threatened to take away the BOJ's independence to allow the government to call the shots on targets and the means to achieve them.

Sato, a former economist who has consistently called for more BOJ measures to keep yen rises in check, proposed linking monetary policy more closely to a rise in consumer prices and suggested giving up the BOJ's view that consumer inflation will approach 1 percent in the fiscal year ending in March 2015.

The minutes of the meeting showed Takahide Kiuchi, another former economist who joined the board with Sato in July, was alone in his support for the proposal, showing that their views lacked broad support at least for now.

"A few members raised the issue of whether it was possible to further exert influence on interest rates and demonstrate the BOJ's clearer stance on monetary easing by changing the current wording," the minutes showed.

"Most members expressed a cautious view regarding making changes to the wording of the policy commitment at this point."

At last month's meeting, the BOJ eased policy by boosting its asset-buying program by 11 trillion yen ($133.5 billion), to 91 trillion yen. It also unveiled a plan to supply banks with unlimited cheap long-term funds under a new scheme initially seen sized around 15 trillion yen.

But that has not eased pressure on the BOJ.

Investors have bet on bolder monetary easing by the BOJ as Abe repeated calls for "unlimited" policy loosening, which drew strong opposition by incumbent prime minister and ruling party leader Yoshihiko Noda.

A weekly gauge of sentiment in the Japanese government bond market worsened to a level unseen in nearly five months on speculation of more aggressive easing following a likely change in government after the election.

Shirakawa left few clues on how soon the BOJ will next ease policy but warned of the pain a strong yen was inflicting on the export-reliant economy, signaling readiness to act again should Japan slip deeper into recession.

"We'll conduct policy mindful of the effect yen rises will have on the economy and prices," he said in a meeting with business leaders in the Chubu central Japan region, home to automobile giant Toyota Motor Corp.

Some market players expect the BOJ to ease again at its next rate review on December 19-20, days after the general election.

QUESTION OF DEGREE

A Reuters poll last week showed most economists believe Japan is already in a mild recession due to faltering global demand but a recovery is seen early next year.

The LDP's Abe, who was last prime minister in 2007, is calling for far more aggressive monetary measures to revive the struggling economy, including a commitment to an inflation target of 2 percent to overcome deflation.

Sato proposed that the BOJ should say it will maintain ultra-easy policy until a 1 percent rise in consumer prices has been maintained, which is stronger that the BOJ's current commitment to maintain strong monetary stimulus until 1 percent inflation can be foreseen.

Shirakawa suggested that he saw no need to change the language now, saying that markets already expect ultra-easy policy to continue for a long time even under the existing policy pledge.

He also refused to be drawn into the political debate, repeating that he has made clear his response at last week's news conference when he turned down most of the demands as unrealistic.

"Japan's consumer inflation may gradually exceed 1 percent if government and private-sector efforts to boost Japan's growth potential bear fruit," he told reporters after the meeting with business leaders.

The BOJ now sets a 1 percent inflation target and sees as desirable medium- to long-term price growth in a range of zero to 2 percent.

Japan's main opposition LDP kept its clear lead ahead of the election, opinion polls showed on Monday, with the hawkish Japan Restoration Party (JRP) led by a nationalist ex-Tokyo governor running second.

Outbreaks of Foodborne Illnesses Are Becoming Harder to Detect

New diagnostic tests inadvertently undercut surveillance abilities of public health officials

spinach FOODBORNE ILLNESS: New tests may make it harder to trace outbreaks of food poisoning back to their source. Image: Flickr / astairin

New diagnostic tests for common foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Escherichia coli may hinder the ability of public health officials to detect multistate outbreaks. The problem is an inability to trace contamination to its source.

In 2009 Alicia Cronquist, an epidemiologist with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment noticed that several rural clinics in her state had switched from traditional laboratory tests that relied on growing a culture to rapid nonculture tests. In the past, when patients were suspected of having certain foodborne illnesses, doctors routinely sent a stool sample to a laboratory, which detected a range of potential bacterial culprits. (Some foodborne infections, like Listeria, are diagnosed with blood tests.) An isolate, or sample of the bacterial colony at fault, would then be forwarded to local, state or federal officials, who had the DNA tested to determine the organism's specific strain. The telling DNA sequence, or "fingerprint," was entered into the PulseNet system so that public health officials could see if samples from other newly diagnosed patients matched the information in the database. Analysis of when and where people contracted an infection of that specific strain can help lead to the source of contamination, allowing investigators to remedy the situation.

But, Cronquist says, over the course of a year, a clear shift in the types of tests being run in local labs had resulted in much less information being shared with her department. "We saw our surveillance data changing, and by 2010, almost 15 percent of total case reports were using the nonculture tests," she says.

The new tests do have a lot going for them. They provide quicker results to the physician and patient. They are often less expensive and, in some cases, may not require a stool sample at all. What is more, some of them can spot pathogens that the culture-based tests do not and diagnose more infections.

Tennessee's state epidemiologist Timothy F. Jones notes, for instance, that culture tests for E. coli look for the 0157 strain, which is among the bacteria that produce the Shiga toxin; that strain infamously accounted for the outbreak of food poisoning from spinach this year. "With the new rapid tests," he says, "we can actually detect the whole class of Shiga-toxin producing bacteria. The rapid test is detecting additional bacteria we would have missed before."

But adoption of the new tests has meant that health officials, like Cronquist, are not always getting the isolate required to do the DNA fingerprinting that is needed to help identify a source of contamination, such as E. coli in lettuce or salmonella in raw spinach.

In that way, Jones says, "these rapid tests put us back where we were when we didn't have the ability to do [DNA] fingerprinting."

The trend is particularly worrisome because other ways of protecting the public from foodborne illnesses are also stumbling. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in six Americans (or 48 million) become sick from a foodborne disease each year and 3,000 die. A study released late last month by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group indicated the problem is not improving in part because laws like the Food Modernization Safety Act continue to languish in the White House's Office of Management and Budget. And a federal monitoring program?the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Microbiological Data Program, which tested produce for pathogens?began to be shut down on November 12.?

Creativity and Affect | Self Improvement & Personal Growth ...

Creativity and Affect

The authors of this volume attempt to cohere the field of creativity and affect in a scholarly fashion by categorizing and characterizing some of its major features, including environmental influences; underlying processes; specific affective states; the role of atypical or pathological personalities; unconscious processes; physiological components; proactive and reactive stimuli; intrinsic motivation; eminence versus everyday creativity; and testing of assessing the affective component of creativity. The authors also examine and discuss the role that emotions, feelings and moods play in the creative process. This volume also provides a vehicle for students and psychotherapists, with which they can fully appreciate the feelings generated by the creative process and the various stages of it. How does a creator feel during its more mundane phases? Can he or she tolerate the frustration of failing and being unsuccessful most of the time? What is the real joy of achievement, success, and ultimate acceptance by ones peers in a given field? Do we have to exhibit major psychopathological features in order to achieve eminence in specific fields? What is the role of mind altering substances, mood disorders, and the like? This volume answers these questions and more. Author: Shaw, Melvin P./ Runco, Mark A./ Shaw, Melvin P. Freed Russian scientist: 'Nothing has changed'

Gray, pale and thin, Valentin Danilov has changed more than the country that jailed him in 2004 for selling state secrets to China.

The 66-year-old Russian physicist, whose face is now criss-crossed with deep wrinkles, could not be blamed for suffering from "deja vu" when he was released on Saturday from a Siberian penal colony on spying charges he says were politically motivated.

President Vladimir Putin, now 60, is back in the Kremlin for a third term, corruption is rife, the unreformed economy is creaking under the weight of its dependence on energy exports, and opponents are still being imprisoned.

Danilov, whose case human rights activists say is evidence that Putin uses Russia's weak courts to persecute his enemies, sees little hope of rapid change.

"Nothing has changed," Danilov said in an interview, putting some of the blame on Russia's 143 million people.

"The authorities do not descend on us from the moon. They are the choice of the nation. So the authorities reflect the state of the nation," he told Reuters a few hours after his release from the high-fenced penal colony.

News of one major change did reach him during his last year in the colony in a grimy industrial area outside the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, 4,000 miles east of Moscow - reports that people had taken to the streets to protest.

Demonstrations against Putin in Moscow and other big cities began a year ago, caused by anger over allegations of fraud in a parliamentary election won by the Kremlin leader's party, but they have largely lost momentum and the opposition is divided.

Reflecting on the possibility of free and fair elections, and the possibility of political upheaval, Danilov said: "The nation is not yet ready."

New crackdown?
Dressed formally in a red tie and grey jacket, Danilov was speaking in an apartment in the city where he was born and jailed, and which was once part of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's network of Gulag prison camps.

A researcher at Krasnoyarsk State University, he was first arrested in 2001. He admitted selling information about satellite technology to a Chinese company but he, other scientists and human rights activists said the information had already been available from public sources.

An initial decision to acquit him was overturned, and he was sentenced to 14 years in prison in a second trial. A Krasnoyarsk court granted him parole earlier this month, citing good behavior and poor health.

Asked how he felt about finally stepping outside the prison walls, he said "there were no feelings," but added that he had no regrets and that he regarded himself as a political prisoner.

At the time of Danilov's trial, Putin's opponents said the president was clamping down on academics who had contacts with foreign countries. They say his release showed that the Kremlin no longer regarded the physicist as a threat.

Opposition members see similarities between what happened to Danilov and the pressure being put on them now in Moscow.

Citing legal cases such as the sentencing of members of the Pussy Riot punk band over an anti-Putin protest in a Russian Orthodox Church, they say the Kremlin is using the legal system to smother dissent.

Putin denies this but several opposition leaders face criminal charges and the parliament has adopted a slew of laws over the last half year which opponents say could be applied against them.

These include tightening checks on lobby and campaign groups that have foreign funding, forcing them to register as "foreign agents," and broadening the definition of treason.

"As for President Putin, I guess everybody would be the same as him in his place. The court makes the tsar," Danilov said, avoiding direct criticism of the president but condemning the circle around him.

"The problem is not one of law but of how the judging is done."

He read widely about Russia's legal system during his time in prison, and said the judiciary was still open to political manipulation.

No plans to enter politics
After nearly a decade behind bars, including in colonies populated by murderers, Danilov's brown eyes are still penetrating and his wits sharp. He deflects questions about his health but is not a broken man.

He does not want to look back, refusing to go into detail about his life in prison or his health.

"It's like serving in the army, only that a man in the army has fewer rights. By taking the military oath, a soldier gives up some of his rights. While in prison, the prisoner can at least call in a lawyer and make complaints about abuse of rights," he said.

Among people he admires, he listed several Putin critics - opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, former world chess champion Garry Kasparov and human rights campaigner Lyudmila Alexeyeva.

He praised the entry into politics of Mikhail Prokhorov, a rich tycoon who challenged Putin in the March presidential election while denying accusations of being a "Kremlin stooge."

Beyond retirement age, worn down by his years in prison, Danilov signals that starting a new fight with the state or taking on a role in opposition is the last thing on his mind.

He wants to return to work to try out ideas he developed while he had time on his hands in jail. He also says he is ready to play an advisory role on how to reform Russia's outdated penal system.

He aims to rebuild his strength and family ties with his daughter, granddaughter and wife of 41 years who lives in Novosibirsk, also in Siberia.

Danilov said he had no plans to flee Russia or deal with space research again. He plans to keep in touch with people he met behind bars, including a man sentenced for murder whom he helped to obtain higher education.

Putting a positive spin on his years in jail, he said: "They say that to get to know a country well, one must visit its cemeteries and prison. I used to visit cemeteries often and now I've been to prison too.

"So you can really believe me when I say I know perfectly fine now what Russia is," he said.

He paused for a moment and, smiling, switched to English to quote the title of a Shakespeare play: "All's well that ends well."

What is Normal Sexual Curiosity as Kids Grow Up???? | Musings by ...

My son was 3 and bath time meant time with 40 floating toys, lots of bubbles and his snorkeling mask.? It also meant I could make dinner 15 feet away in relative peace.? It was an evening ritual that worked for both of us.? One night he yelled from the tub, ?Mommy! Mommy! Come quick, I need to show you something!?? As I ran tub-side, he sat up and with eyes bright behind his orange diving mask, he pointed down at his penis.? ?Look how big my penis got when I was diving with my toys!? It?s huge!? Is it going to always be this big?!?? I loved his enthusiasm for life and once again I wished I could capture that sense of discovery and adventure in each small moment.? ?No, sweetie.? Sometimes when your penis gets rubbed it gets larger.? Pretty soon it will go back to how it usually is.?? Wanting him to someday be able to appreciate the miracle of his body I added, ?Isn?t it wonderful that God gave you a penis that can change size sometimes??

I often have the pleasure of training parents and youth pastors about the sexual development of children and how to raise sexually, spiritually and relationally healthy kids. ?This is something all parents want ? however most didn?t?experience?a good example of this growing up and now as parents or youth workers feel completely lost in knowing how to coach and love a child through their sexual development.

Recently I had the opportunity to listen to a fishbowl conversation of 6 adolescents discussing what they most wanted the adults in their life to understand about growing up in today?s world. ?Over and over they said, ?Please just talk to us. ?Listen to us. Tell us about your life ? how you learned and struggled through growing up ? how you learned from your mistakes. ?Tell us your stories. Help us know we are not alone and that you understand how hard this must be for us.?

Subsequent to this fish bowl discussion was one with a group of 6 youth workers and parents of teens. ?Together they had a conversation about what it is like attempting to guide and parent adolescents. ?Their resounding message was, ?It is terrifying, frightening, overwhelming. We don?t know what to say, we don?t have the answers and we feel totally lost.?

The beautiful thing the adults could hear from the wisdom of the youth was they didn?t have to have the answers ? they just needed to listen with compassion and offer the youth their own stories of growing up. ?They just wanted the adults to open up the?conversation?and be there with an open and loving heart. No answers needed ? just honesty, transparency and love.

So it is in this spirit of loving and guiding kids as they grow ? that I offer this guideline of normative childhood sexual development based on research and observational data.

In utero and at birth

  • Prior to birth males can have erections
  • The capacity for sexual response is present at birth for both genders
  • At birth girl?s vaginas are capable of lubrication

??Toddlers

  • Rhythmic manipulation associated with masturbation begins at age 2 1/2 to 3 years and is considered natural sexual expression ? bring comfort and calm
  • Gender identity (maleness, femaleness) is typically formed by age 2
  • Little boys and girls can experience orgasm from masturbation although boys will not ejaculate until puberty
  • They want to learn the names of all body parts
  • There is increased curiosity of adult gendered social behaviors

Three to Seven

  • Preschool kids are interested in everything ? including sexuality
  • The like to urinate in all kinds of positions and places
  • They are often very affectionate ? love hugging
  • Lots of curiosity?and kissing other adults and children
  • May imitate adult social sexual behavior
  • Very common to play ?doctor? and ?look see?
  • They understand ?living together? as family and may talk about ?getting married? when they are older
  • Normal sexual experimentation is spontaneous, silly, and light-hearted, and although may be embarrassing, it is uncommon to involve anger, shame, fear, or anxiety.

Eight to Twelve

  • Puberty !!!
  • Girls: breast buds and pubic hair (>10); periods 10 ? 13
  • Boys: further development of penis and testicles(>11); voice changes; pubic hair
  • May become more modest even with same sex parent
  • Masturbation increases and interest in internet pornography often begins.
  • Lots of questions about intercourse, petting, oral sex, and anal sex, homosexuality, rape and incest ? but may be more shy to ask.? Requires more casual and stealth approaches.? This is a key time to discuss sexuality and reproduction in more detail.
  • Same gender play and exploration common
  • In the company of same sex friends, masturbating together or looking at or caressing each other?s genitals is common among pre-adolescent boys and girls.
  • Some group ?dating?. Interest in social media increases as can secrecy. Be aware and open. Be willing to set boundaries for their protection and to teach them how to manage social media and the increasing complexity in relationships at school.
  • Increased desire to attend events, parties and may develop public ?crushes? or ?go out?, but this is mostly a social occurrence

Adolescence (13-19)

  • Between 5% to 10% of adolescent males and 6% of females report sexual experiences with someone of the same gender, usually another adolescent.
  • Developmental tasks include:
    • Resolving conflict of identity and role confusion.
    • Establishing gender identity of manhood or womanhood, or conflict about gender roles.
    • Developing a sense of stable self.
    • Managing physical and emotional intimacy in relationships
      • Girls need additional guidance on the development of purpose/power/voice
      • Boys need additional guidance?on the development of their emotional intelligence and relational skills
      • More physiological changes ? growth in genitals and breasts, facial and pubic hair.
      • Increased desire to relate to romantic partner sexually.
      • Research on the hook-up culture suggests it can lead to disillusionment in romantic partnership and lasting love

America, Religion & Sex ? average age of initial intercourse based on religious affiliation:

    • No religion=16.4
    • Fundamentalist protestant=16.9
    • Other protestant=16.9
    • Catholic=17.7
    • Other religion=18.8
  • There is no way to predict how a particular teenager will act sexually. Most adolescents explore relationships with one another, fall in and out of love, and participate in sexual intercourse before the age of 20.
  • Adolescents report less sexual communication growing up than parents thought they did.
  • Adolescents who have parents that are open to talk and listen about sexual issues describe being closer to their parents overall.

?20 something

  • Young adults typically experience the greatest number of different partners in their 20s.
  • During this period the risk for contracting STDs is highest, and the need to practice safe sex paramount.
  • There is increased desire for intimacy however the current cultural pace of life leaves limited time for relationship complexity.
  • Young adults are tending to marry later in urban areas ? 28 males; 26 females.

The ensuing comments on my friend's status basically teased out these ideas; touching on things like truth and 'telling it like it is', pastoral sensitivity etc. Whilst I didn't necessarily agree with all that was said, I was ok with this discussion... except for one comment (made by another minister, also from a different denomination to me).

Her comment was:
